A flat metal blade with notches along the edge is a plain key; a thicker blade with a wavy groove milled down the face is laser-cut; a plastic head with a chip inside is a transponder key; and a remote-head key or a fob has buttons on it. Laser-Cut Keys Need a Different Cutter

A sidewinder key is easy to spot. Instead of notches along the edge, it has a snaking groove milled into the flat face of the blade, and the blade is thicker than a plain one. An edge-tracing duplicator can’t follow that groove, because all it reads is the outline of the key.

The key cutting machine on the van mills the groove instead of tracing an edge, so a sidewinder copy is made right in your drive. We check the new blade in the door lock first. Many laser-cut keys also carry a chip, so the clone step comes next, and then we start the car.

Why does a chip key need cloning, not just cutting?

The head of a chip key holds a small transponder, and the car checks its ID before it will start. A copy needs the blade cut to match and the chip’s ID cloned onto a new chip, and we start the car with it before we leave.

The transponder is a tiny chip with no battery, tucked inside the plastic head. When you turn the key, the car sends out a signal. The chip answers with its ID, and the car checks that answer against the IDs it already knows.

Cloning keeps that ID the same. A programmer on the van reads the ID off your working chip and writes it onto a fresh chip, and the blade is cut to match your key. To the car, the new key is one it already trusts, which is why we start it with the new key before we go.

A clone needs a working original to read from. That’s the whole reason to make the spare now, while one key still works. If the last key is gone, or the only one left is too worn to trace, that’s a lost car key replacement job instead.

Can a key fob be copied from one that still works?

Often, yes. Many remote-head keys and some fobs can be cloned from a working one at your driveway. A fob the car has to be taught to accept is a pairing job, and that’s our car key programming service instead.

The difference is in how the car listens. When the remote side can be read and written like a chip, we clone it, and the buttons on the new key work like the buttons on the old one. When the car has to learn the new fob from the inside, through the OBD port, that’s pairing, and it takes a different visit with different tools.

Price Factors for Copying a Car Key

A copy quote comes down to a handful of things, and they’re the same things we ask about on the call.

• The key in your hand. A plain key, a laser-cut key, a chip key and a remote-head key each take a different blank and a different amount of work.
• Clone or pair. When the chip clones, the whole job is done at the driveway. When the system has to be paired, that’s a programming visit and it’s quoted as one.
